No Surprises Act Billing (NSA) and Good Faith Estimates (GFE): When you get emergency care or are treated by an out-of-network provider at an in-network hospital or ambulatory surgical center, you are protected from balance billing. In these cases, you shouldn’t be charged more than your plan’s copayments, coinsurance and/or deductible. Please click here to find out more information about your rights and protections against surprise medical bills.
As of 01/01/2022, health care facilities are required by law to give uninsured and self-pay clients a Good Faith Estimate (GFE) of costs for services when scheduling care or when a patient requests an estimate. The good faith estimate isn’t a bill. When an uninsured (or self-pay) individual is billed for items or services where the total billed charges for a provider or facility are $400 or more above the total expected charges in the good faith estimate, they may request to dispute the amount.
